Japanese Deluxe Acid Dye

Japanese Deluxe Acid Dye

Use On...

    Silk, wool and nylon.

About Them...

  • These are the dyes used by Japanese kimono painters to produce clear sparkling colours...really vibrant! The liquid dyes are very concentrated (double full strength). For Rőzome, (wax resist), dilute with water as desired. For silk painting dilute with white vinegar and water...use 1 part vinegar to 5 parts water. New colours may be mixed, shelf life is at least five years. The dyes are available in liquid or powder form. Click here for powder mixing instructions.

How To Fix Them...

The dyes require a mild acid mordant to help them bond to the fiber. A soybean and water mixture is used for Rőzome, simply add white vinegar for other methods. Steam fix 1 hour, remove and cool quickly after steaming. Air set 48 hours before rinsing well in cool water. We often do a second steaming prior to washing fabrics that will be exposed to light.

Great Because...

The colours are so vivid and remain exceptionally clear during layering...they sparkle long after other dyes give in and become muddy or dull.

What You Will Need...

  • For silk painting...Liquid dyes and white vinegar —that's it! Dyes may be thickened with Opulence Dye Binder or CMC Powder - see Thickeners. For immersion dyeing...liquid or powdered dye (check safety notes below), white vinegar, a dye pot and a heat source.

Getting Started...

  • For Rőzome...To paint large bold freeform designs, you'll need the liquid dye, dried soybeans, Parvan Wax (8 parts) and Microcrystalline Wax ( 2 parts) - see Wax Resists, a wax brush and several other large firm bristle or sponge brushes. To paint intricate designs you'll also require an assortment of Japanese brushes - see Japanese Brushes.

What It Can Do...

Excels for Rőzome, great for dyeing nylon.

Safety Notes...

This is a great dye and has been used for years in Japanese studios without elaborate precautions, but Japan does not supply detailed information so we use all safety precautions possible. These dyes are available as liquids or powders. We highly recommend the liquid form, it may be used for all applications. The liquid dyes are fume free but should not be allowed to evaporate and become airborne, as the powder should not be inhaled...cover dyes, clean brushes and wear gloves. Do not use the powdered form unless you have an approved dust mask with changeable filters and an isolated mixing area with good ventilation.

What Is Rőzome?

  • Basically it's a layering process using brushed hot wax and dry brushed colour blends. The manipulation of the brushed wax creates the design structure and forms the detail and texture. The technique of both dye and wax application are unique to this method. Large bold or fine intricate designs are possible...they all have an unmistakable clarity and depth not obtainable any other way. Step away from resist boundary lines into infinite design possibilities! We schedule basic and advanced workshops.
