The Listing Below Is A Sample Of Our Regular Classes

Our classes are designed to make it easy for you. Techniques are presented in a simple clear format. We put out an array of patterns to trace so you can relax and enjoy yourself. We supply lots of personal attention and you create something wonderful.

Most classes are limited to between 6 and 10 participants so be sure to register early. Our classes are held from 10 AM to 4 PM at our inspirational Deep Cove location overlooking the calm water of the inlet. We are about 10 minutes from the North end of the Second Narrows bridge.

Prices include coffee and tea, the odd goodie or two, a comprehensive class manual and all materials and supplies except as noted. We are very informal so come dressed in old clothes, bring an apron, a bag lunch and be prepared to learn fantastic new things.

Fees are payable upon registration. Please add 5% GST and make a note of the date as we don't phone to confirm. Due to our limited class size and the extensive preparation necessary per student we are no longer able to handle transfers or refunds.

Silk Painting Magic...

Get ready to turn out something spectacular in this day of delight with silk and colour. You'll learn all the procedures in this class. Painting techniques are explained, demonstrated and practiced. You'll end this day with a new appreciation for this luscious fabric. Silk is easy to paint, inexpensive, washable, comfortable and surprisingly durable. Personalize it with colour and design for unique cards, pillows, garments, jewelry, wall pieces, whatever - there's a silk for every use. In class you'll learn how to blend colours, make swirling designs using salt, intricate designs using water and use resist outlines to make gorgeous "stained glass" like patterns. You'll leave with a piece for cards or jewelry, two 18" squares perfect for pillows or framing, a comprehensive manual and lots of inspiration.

Dyeing Visual Texture...

Dyeing Visual Texture quilt detail by Judy Buffington

A perfect class for sewers or quilters who want to end the expense of purchasing hand dyed fabrics. These are super simple methods of dyeing visual texture. We use a professional permanent dye (Reactive MX) and show you how to dye progressions of related colours. In class you'll dye a six step light to dark textured gradation and a six step progressive cross blend by mixing two base colours. You'll learn how to dye different textural patterns on the cloth and go home with a total of 6 yards of hand dyed cotton fabric. Please bring two plastic dish pans; about 12" X 14" and 6" deep. The cost of 6 yards of cotton is included in the price of the course.

Marbling on Fabric...

Class Sample Marbling on fabric

Marbling is the ancient art of floating colours on a liquid base, manipulating them into intricate, rhythmic designs and transfer printing the colours onto cloth or paper. You'll learn many intriguing combed patterns, how to make your own tools and low cost alternatives to expensive equipment. We'll show you how to print items such as tennis shoes, T-shirts or lamp shades. You'll print on an assortment of silks and cottons in class and assemble six greeting cards to show off your talent. Manual included. Please bring a hair dryer.

Watercolour on Silk...

Class Sample Watercolor On Silk Gold Rose

This workshop explores the technique of  watercolour painting using dyes on silk. Learn to create landscapes and luminescent florals using a product that temporarily transforms fabric into a paper-like medium. Structured designs are painted without the usual resist boundary lines and the finished silk is soft and vibrant. We will cover techniques for preparing the silk, blending and layering colour, painting detail, creating form, finishing processes and mounting paintings for display. You'll finish two or three paintings in class. Please bring a hairdryer and watercolour brushes if you have them. Previous painting experience is not necessary.

Silk Painting with Hidden Gutta Lines...

 

Learn this unique technique of doing traditional silk painting with boundary resist lines that are not visible in the final painting. This is a step by step layering process resulting in paintings with extraordinary depth. In class you will finish one or two paintings. Previous painting experience not necessary. Procion MX Colour Mixing Weekend...

 

We've scheduled this workshop on colour mixing and layering for immersion dyeing because of repeated requests. Appropriate for dyers or quilters who wish to gain knowledge of transparent colour performance in relation to immersion dyeing natural fabrics. You'll learn how to balance different dye colours, how to use chemicals and temperature to improve results, how to do colour trials and use formulas for stock solutions, how to mix colours, how to over dye colours and how to accurately reproduce colours. You'll go home with a book of mounted dyed swatches and notes: a reference that you'll refer to for years to come. This is the perfect companion course to Procion MX Dyeing Techniques.

Shibori Weekend...

 

Traditional Arashi Shibori—a Japanese pole wrapping technique of patterned resist dyeing will be taught in this workshop. These resisted fabrics may be left in permanent pleats or ironed flat to reveal fascinating patterns. Innovative modern methods of pleating will also be taught as well as dye application, over dyeing and multi-colour dye applications. You'll experiment with different types of silk, dyes and wrapping techniques and complete two or three Shibori scarves in class. Comprehensive class manual included. Bring a hair dryer and four empty clear glass wine bottles.

Procion MX Dyeing Techniques Weekend...

 

This comprehensive workshop focuses on the many ways of using permanent Procion MX dyes on natural fibers. Various immersion and surface application techniques will be explored. You'll learn how to recycle washable garments or colour new ones, how to achieve optimum colour and regulate colour depth, how to dye cotton, rayon, silk and wool, how to accomplish even dyeing and do "rainbow" dyeing, tie dyeing, brush or spray dyeing, how to work with thickened dyes and the various methods of dye fixation. This informative class will present you with options you'll use over and over. You'll experiment on silk and cotton and take home various samples and detailed reference material.

Batik Weekend...

Batik is back! Come and spend a weekend exploring this wonderful art of layered wax and dye. In this workshop we will cover all the topics...equipment and supplies, design and colour planning, mixing waxes, different methods of wax application, immersion and direct dyeing methods and finishing processes; in short all you'll need to know to successfully create imaginative and beautiful batik textiles at home. You'll go home with numerous cotton pillow, picture or napkin sized paintings and a comprehensive class manual. Please bring a hair dryer.

Beginner's Rõzome Weekend...

Class Sample Rozome Freeform Design by Judith Madsen

Create silks that glow with vibrant colour and inner depth! We'll begin the study of this Japanese art of layered wax resist with traditional and modern free form designing techniques. You'll learn how to paint colour gradations, how to define and layer the painted dyes, a variety of brushed wax applications and how to make the colour sing with the assistance of soy beans. You'll watch your designs materialize layer by layer as you paint on colour and wax. Advanced Rõzome Weekend...

Rozome by Bill Morton

Advanced Rõzome steps you into infinite structured design possibilities. Our Free Form Rõzome class is an absolute essential before taking this one. You'll learn how to manipulate the wax brush to create design texture and structure. You'll learn how to paint and wax detail into your designs. You'll learn how to define the brushed wax with dyes to paint three dimensional effects. You'll complete a variety of silk pieces during the weekend and be inspired by a slide show of contemporary and traditional Japanese textile painting. Please bring a hair dryer.

Devoré...

Class Sample Devore dyed silk velvet

Devoré means devoured in French. It is the process of etching or burning out portions of fabric to produce patterns. The etched designs create elegant cut work on cotton or rayon and decorative textural designs on silk and rayon velvet or satin. In this workshop you'll experiment on a variety of fabrics. Etching the velvet or satin removes the rayon portion in selected areas to reveal the remaining design on a silk net background. You'll learn how to make and use Devoré paste, how to do outlined cut work, how to do different paste applications, how to do the complete etching process and how to dye your etched fabric. Samples plus a cotton cut work and an etched velvet pillow front will be completed in class. Please bring a variety of pressed dry leaves and a hair dryer.

Simply Colour...

 

This is a day for the colour confused. It's a "how to mix it" and 'how to figure out what goes with what". Learn a simple approach to the dye colours you need to have and how to use them. The emphasis of this workshop is on surface applications—painting on dyes. Explore a basic dye palette and many colour mixing formulas. You'll learn basic colour terms, basic colour combinations, colour planning and how to use colour combinations for optimum visual impact. You'll complete various colour mixing exercises and paint mini resisted designs as samples. Please bring a hair dryer.

Image Transfer...

Class Sample Image Transfer Setacolor Ferns

Learn different methods of transferring images to fabric. You'll experiment with photo transfer fabric, burnished transfers, photocopier transfer paper, scanned computer images printed on cloth and sun induced image printing. Favourite designs or family photos may be used without harming the originals. Photos using transfer fabric are printed in black, white and shades of gray. Photos with good contrast work best. You'll learn techniques of adding colour to your black and white prints. Bring an assortment of coloured and black and white photos and images in various sizes. Black and white old family photos are fun to reproduce, newspaper prints are also effective. Computer scanned images may be coloured, maximum 7 ½" x 10". We will also provide assorted designs. Transfers will be made on both silks and cottons....you'll go home with an array of printed images and a set of greeting cards. Please bring an iron and hair dryer.

Microwave and Embellishment...

Class Sample Microwave & Embellishment Sample

Explore the endless possibilities of using your microwave to colour silk or cotton fabrics quickly and easily. This class focuses on microwave dyed blending and patterning techniques with overlaid embellishment. You'll learn how to add a metallic glow from subtle to dazzling using pearl colours, metallic foils and glitters. Perfect for Christmas giving. You'll complete an array of pillow sized samples and a charmeuse silk scarf in class. Extra scarves will be available for purchase at discounted prices. Please bring a hair dryer.

Paint a Christmas Banner...

 

Spend a day creating a treasure you'll hang for years to come. Each student will complete a 24" X 36" silk wall hanging. Banners are painted on silk habotai using the resist outline technique to define the design. They will be hand painted with Setasilk, a French paint designed for ease of use and fixing. Although we will provide a choice of designs, you are welcome to bring your own. The actual design area after hems measures 22" wide by 32" long. Easy finishing and hanging methods will be discussed in class.
