Removing And Adding Colour With Discharge Paste

Product Information...

Discharge paste is used to remove areas of colour from dyed natural fabrics. It will work on all fabrics including silk. It is most effective on black fabrics. There are occasional fiber reactive dye colours which are resistant to colour removal. Test samples should be prepared prior to production runs.

Directions To Remove Colour...

  1. Print Paste may be silk screened or applied with a brush. Thin with water if necessary for penetration into the fabric.
  2. After the paste has dried, iron with a steam iron on the lowest steam setting. Use a light weight press cloth or sheet of tissue. The more steam the better. The steam activates the chemicals and removes the colour from the discharge painted or printed image.
  3. Wash or rinse the fabric to remove the discharge paste.

Directions to Remove and Add Colour in One Step...

Transparent fabric paints and pigments such as Setacolor Transparent and Opulence Pigments are not visible on dark coloured fabrics.  Being "transparent" the base colour of the fabric affects the overlaying colour. For example transparent yellow painted on black fabric won't show up. Although opaque paints will appear true on dark fabrics they tend to be stiffer than transparent colours.

Since Discharge Paste removes dye but not paint, transparent paints may be mixed into the paste before application to the fabric. One part paste and one part paint consists of enough chemical to remove the dye and enough paint for good colour. After application iron on high heat using a press cloth. The dark background colour will fade to reveal the transparent paint colour.

Wash or rinse the fabric to remove the discharge paste.

Safety...

Contact with eyes and skin may cause irritation, wear rubber gloves and safety goggles. Avoid ingestion. A strong odor is given off during the steam ironing step. Inhalation of vapors while ironing may result in respiratory irritation. Wear an approved organic vapor/fume respirator. Use in a well ventilated area. Keep away from children and pets. MSDS available upon request.
