Discharging Colour With Formosul

General Information...
For stripping and discharge printing on cotton, silk, wool and nylon. Not all colours can be stripped 100%. Work in well ventilated area. Gloves, an
approved vapour/fume respirator and safety glasses are necessary for preparation and usage. Formosul's technical name is Sodium Formaldehyde Sulfoxylate. Wear rubber gloves, apron or old clothes.
Utensils used for dye stripping should not be used for food preparation.
Note...Please read instructions carefully before beginning and test
thoroughly before starting large projects.

IMMERSION STRIPPING FOR WOOL, SILK & NYLON
Supplies... 1. Formosul 3 level Tbs.. (48 gr.) 2. White Vinegar 2 cups
Procedure... Dissolve Formosul in 2 ½ gallons (10 liters) of 120° F (50° C) water. Add wet fabric. Raise temperature
to a boil and carefully add the white vinegar. Stir intermittently for 30 to 40 minutes. Rinse well and wash in hot water, 140° F (60° C) with ½ tsp. (2 ½ ml) TNA Detergent per gallon of water.

STOCK DISCHARGE PASTE...
Make this stock thickened paste to use as a base for discharging either Silk, Wool and Nylon or Cotton, Linen and Rayon...
Supplies...
1. Sodium Alginate 3 level tsp. (8 gr.) 2. Pure Water Softener ½ level tsp. (4 gr.) 3. Water 2 cups (500 ml) at room temperature 95° F (35º C)
Procedure...
Dissolve the Pure Water Softener in 1 ½ cups of room temperature water, 95° F (35° C). Slowly add the
Alginate while stirring rapidly. Add remaining water to 2 cups (500 ml). Let set for several hours until it becomes a smooth paste. The paste should be very thick as it is reduced in the next steps.

DISCHARGE PASTE PRINTING FOR SILK, WOOL & NYLON
To Make 1 Quart (1 Liter) Of Discharge Paste...
Supplies... 1. Formosul 10 Tbs.. (150 gr.) 2. Water 1 ½ cups (375 ml)
3. Stock Thickened Paste 2 cups
Procedure...
Dissolve Formosul in room temperature water 95° F (35° C). Add Stock Thickened Paste. Stir. Print and
let dry. Steam for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse then wash in hot water 180° F (84° C) with ½ tsp. (2 ½ ml) TNA Detergent per gallon of water.

DISCHARGE PASTE PRINTING FOR COTTON, LINEN & RAYON
First Make Dye Activator Solution... Mix 1 ½ cups (250 gr) Sodium Carbonate into 4 cups (1 liter) of hot water. Stir to dissolve then allow to come to room temperature before using.
To Make 1 Quart (1 Liter) Of Discharge Paste...
Supplies... 1. Formosul 10 Tbs. (150 gr.) 2. Water 1 ½ cups (375 ml)
3. Stock Thickened Paste 2 cups 4. Dye Activator Solution 1 cup (200 ml)
Procedure...
Dissolve Formosul in room temperature water 95° F (35° C). Add Stock Thickened Paste and Dye Activator Solution. Stir. Print and let dry. Steam for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse and wash in hot water 180°
F (84° C) with ½ tsp. (2 ½ ml) TNA and 4 Tbs. of white vinegar per gallon of water.

Steam Fixation...
- The printed fabric must be thoroughly dry before it is steamed. To prepare the fabric for steaming roll it loosely in unprinted newsprint, pellon or muslin. The fabric must be completely covered and
separated to avoid staining. Steam over boiling water...refer to our
stove top steaming instructions or our manual on building steamers.
