Making A Painting Solution With Japanese Acid Dye
General Information...
Japanese Deluxe Acid Dyes may be used to dye silk, wool, nylon or leather. We use them exclusively for Rőzome Wax Resist as they remain clear through multiple layers - long after other
dyes have gone muddy.
To Make Liquid Dye For Rőzome @ 20 grams per liter...
Put 1/2 liter (2 cups) of boiling water into a 1 liter (1 quart) heat proof container. Add 20 grams of dye powder and stir until dissolved.
To cool quickly, add ice cubes, then add cold water to make 1 liter (1 quart). This makes a dye concentrate of approximately double strength, it may be thinned as desired with water
Safety...
Please be aware that we are not able to obtain safety information from Japan. Do not use in the powered form unless you have an approved dust mask with changeable filters and an
isolated mixing area with good ventilation. Wear protective clothing and glasses. Do not use measuring equipment to be used for food.
Notes...
This solution is very concentrated, about double full strength, dilute with water as desired. The dyes are used in conjunction with a soy bean milk mordant. The soy bean mordant may
be brushed onto the silk or added to the dye.
For surface applications without the soybean mordant the dyes should fix with the addition of white household vinegar. We would suggest diluting the dye with a mixture of 1 part
white household vinegar to 5 parts water.
Fixation...
Fixation is by steaming 1 hour, unwrap and cool quickly. The dyes may be steamed for another hour if desired.
