Reactive H Dye Solution

Making Reactive H Hand Painting Solution

GENERAL INFORMATION...

Procion H Liquid is a Fiber Reactive permanent dye. It is reliable, colour fast and versatile. Like the Procion MX it forms a stronger bond to the fiber than any other dye class making it an excellent choice when washability or light fastness are a consideration. Dyes may be intermixed to produce virtually any colour. They may be used on all natural fibers. Chemicals are added to activate the dyes so they bond permanently to the fiber. Since cellulose fibers (cotton, linen and rayon) react differently than protein fibers (silk and wool) some ingredients are listed separately.

These dyes may be applied as a thin solution for hand painting, spraying and air brushing or thickened into a print base for controlled hand painting, block printing, splatter painting, mono-printing, silk-screening and warp painting. Use Thiourea Dioxide as a discharge agent.

Due to the versatility of these dyes many application methods and alternate recipes for use are available. Instructions begin with basics and continue on with several options and information.

SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT...

  • Use only glass, enamel, plastic or stainless steel spoons and containers NO Aluminum or galvanized metal. Do not use dye mixing equipment for food preparation.
  • Store all dyes out of reach of small children and pets, do not leave dyes out if you are not in attendance.
  • Wear light surgical gloves when handling dyes, keep away from eyes and make sure no one drinks them! No toxic fumes to inhale.

Basic Recipe for Thin Hand Painting Solution...

A - Make the chemical water...for 1 liter or quart...

INGREDIENTS

FOR COTTON

FOR SILK

Urea*

140 gr - 14 Tbsp.

70 gr - 7 Tbsp.

Ludigol

10 gr - 4 tsp.

10 gr - 4 tsp.

Pure Water Softener

5 gr - 1 tsp.

5 gr - 1 tsp.

Sodium Bicarbonate*

36 gr - 8 tsp.

25 gr - 5 1/2 tsp.

Directions for making the chemical water...

1- Measure the first 3 ingredients (Urea, Ludigol & Water Softener) into a liter or quart jar. Add 500 ml (2 cups) of hot tap water (120 -140 F), stir constantly until dissolved.

2 - Dissolve the Sodium Bicarbonate in 1 cup of lukewarm water...add to the mixture.

3 - Add cold water to make 1 liter (1 quart) and stir well.

4 - Cool to room temperature before adding dye. Mixture may be stored indefinitely at room temperature.

    * For Procion H Blacks reduce the amount of Urea to 70 gr. (7 Tbs.) for cotton and to 35 gr. (3  Tbs.) for silk. ALSO omit the Sodium Bicarbonate and use Sodium Carbonate 20 gr. (4 tsp.) per liter or quart. Dissolve thoroughly.

B - Add the dye to the chemical water...

Note...The amounts below are guidelines only the depth of colour depends upon the amount of dye used and the concentration of the liquid dye...the measurements given below are for a 25% liquid dye concentration. These measurements will have to be adjusted for our 30% and 40% concentrated dyes.

COLOUR DEPTH FOR DYE AT 25% TO ADD TO 250 ML (1 CUP) OF CHEMICAL WATER

Pale

5 ml - 1 tsp.

Medium

10 ml - 2 tsp

Dark

20 ml - 4 tsp.

Very Dark

25 ml - 5 tsp.

Deep Black

30 ml - 6 tsp.

Procion H Liquid Dye will remain active 1 year if stored in a cool dark place. After the addition of chemical water containing the Sodium Bicarbonate or Carbonate dye activator the shelf life is approximately one month.

Basic Recipe for Thickened Paste for Printing or Painting...

Sodium Alginate is added to the chemical water to thicken it to varying degrees and hold the dye in place on the fabric. More is added for printing, less for hand painting. Mixtures that are too thick may be thinned with the appropriate chemical water.

Directions for making paste...

1 - Follow the Basic Recipe above for making Chemical Water.

2 - After step #2 add 8 to 20 gr. (2 to 5 tsp.) of Sodium Alginate. Stir constantly.

    3 - Continue with step #3.

4 - Set the mixture aside for several hours or overnight until smooth. The mixture will store for several months if sealed and refrigerated. When the paste becomes too thin or moldy discard it.

Note...The appropriate amount of Alginate may also be stirred into mixed chemical water.
