Immersion Tie Dye - Long And Short Method Preparation

Supplies...

General Information...

Weigh the fabric dry,  then calculate the ingredient amounts from the charts following...or use these estimations: 1 lb. (454 gr.) of dry fabric is approximately equal to 3 to 4 square yards (meters) of medium weight fabric...OR 3 to 4 size large T-shirts...OR 1 pair of medium weight slacks.

Use lukewarm water, under 105º F (40º C). When adding solutions to the dye bath, either lift the fiber out or push it to one side. The colour may be deepened by adding more dissolved dye before the Sodium Carbonate fixative is put in. Colours appear two shades darker when wet. To obtain permanent colour it is important to leave the fabric in the dye bath for the required amount of time. The dye bath will remain active about 4 hours after the addition of the sodium carbonate. The dye cannot be reactivated.

Choose one of the two immersion methods below...

Immersion Tie Dye - Long Method...

Supplies...

Non-iodized Salt...Table or Pickling...To help the fabric absorb the dye prior to bonding.
Sodium Carbonate...Bonds the dye to the fiber.
TNA Soap...To wash the fabric after dyeing.

Dyeing Procedure...

Step 1: Tie the fabric tightly.
Step 2: Make a paste, then dissolve the dye in 2 cups (500 ml) of warm water.
Step 3: Measure the required amount of warm water into the dye bath container.
Step 4: Add the required amount of salt, stir until dissolved.
Step 5: Add the dye solution and stir well.
Step 6: Wet and wring the tied fabric, add to the dye bath and stir intermittently for 30 minutes.
Step 7: Completely dissolve the required amount of Sodium Carbonate in as little warm water as possible. Move fabric aside or lift it over the dye bath, add the Sodium Carbonate and stir well. Put the fabric back and stir intermittently for a minimum of 30 minutes and up to 60 minutes for optimum permanence and depth of colour.
Step 8: Remove the fabric and squeeze out excess dye.

Washing Instructions...

  • Step 1: Rinse the tied fabric well in cool water, continue rinsing while undoing the ties, then rinse until the water runs clear. Cold water rinsing may be done in a washing machine.
Step 2: Fill a basin with hot water and 1 tsp.  (5 ml) of TNA Detergent, continue washing and rinsing until the water runs clear. Hot water washing may be done by machine.
Step 3: Dry the fabric, preferably in a dryer.

Dyeing Procedure...

Step 1: Tie the fabric tightly.

Step 3: Measure the required amount of warm water into the dye bath container.
Step 4: Add the required amount of salt, stir until dissolved.
Step 5: Add the dye solution, stir well.
Step 6: Completely dissolve the required amount of Sodium Carbonate in as little warm water as possible, add to the dye bath, stir well.
Step 7: Wet and wring the tied fabric, add to the dye bath and stir intermittently for 30 to 45 minutes.
Step 8: Remove the fabric and squeeze out excess dye. Refer to washing instructions above.

Note: This method is good for dyeing with children, just be sure the dyes are in solution before the class or party begins.
