Indigo belongs to a class of dyes called Vat Dyes, these are among the oldest natural colouring substances used for textiles. Until the beginning of this century Indigo could be
obtained only from plants. Two chemicals are required for the Indigo dyeing process; Thiourea Dioxide is the reducing agent and Lye is the alkali.
Safety...
Indigo and the chemicals used should be treated with caution and good common sense. Wear rubber gloves when handling. Wear eye protection. Work in a well ventilated area. Utensils used
for dyeing should never be used for food.
Preparation...
Lye: (Sodium Hydroxide) can cause severe burns to skin, eyes and mucus membranes upon contact. Do not inhale fumes. Harmful if swallowed or misused. First Aid: Eyes: Immediately flush
eyes with cool water for 20 minutes, get medical attention immediately. Skin: Flush area with water for 15 minutes and then wash with soap and water, get medical attention
immediately. Ingested: Rinse mouth with cold water and drink one or two glasses of milk or water. Do not drink citrus or other acidic fluids. Do not induce vomiting. Get medical
attention immediately. Directions for use: protective clothing, goggles and a respirator should be used when mixing into solution. Always add Lye to cold water, never add water to Lye.
Replace cap immediately after use. Storage and disposal: Keep out of reach of children. In case of spillage sweep into a dust pan, empty down sink and flush with cold water. Do not use aluminum utensils.

For Cotton, Linen and Rayon: Synthetic Indigo, Lye (sodium Hydroxide), Thiourea Dioxide, Non-iodized Salt, Distilled White Vinegar,
Ivory Flakes or Ivory Bar Soap.
For Silk And Wool: Synthetic Indigo, Lye (Sodium Hydroxide), Unflavored Gelatin, Distilled White Vinegar, Ivory Flakes or Ivory Bar Soap.
