Opulence Pigment System

Opulence Pigment System Instructions

General Information...

This is a very versatile and economical hand painting, airbrushing & silkscreening system. It is water based and consists of a transparent or opaque white base, concentrated transparent pigments and a fixative for permanence to washing. The pigments are added to the base to produce brilliant colors.

The Transparent Base...

The Transparent Base is a thick extender medium. Add the pigment color of your choice. The base is the correct consistency for silk screening, block printing or stenciling. Add water to thin for hand painting or air brushing. This base prints clear until color is introduced. It is transparent, colours are changed when overlapped or by the colour of the fabric.

The Opaque White Ink/Base...

The Opaque Base is is used to block the colour of the underlying fabric. It is premixed with a white ink so will not achieve colour as strong as the transparent base. Use without added colour to print white.

The Pigments...

Shake or stir well before using. The pigment is concentrated pure color. Approximately 1 tsp. of pigment in 1 cup of base yields full strength color, Most colors are used at 3-8%. Add more or less to vary the color depth. Black usually requires more pigment. All the colors may be combined to make new colors.

Transparent - Opaque...

All the pigments are transparent. They result in additional colors when overlapped during printing. The color of the fabric used will also affect the final color.

Add opaque white ink/base to make the color more opaque. A small amount of white acts as an optical brightener, making a color appear clearer and stronger.

Resfix...

This fixative increases the color bond and is recommended for laundering. For wash fastness add 5 ml (1 tsp.) of Resfix per 500 ml of color mixture, a 1% solution. Note that mixed color containing Resfix may congeal after 24 hours. The base/pigment/resfix mixture may be diluted with water for hand painting or airbrushing techniques. Maintain approximately a 3-5% Resfix ratio when using a watered down mixture.

Anti-bleed...

Bleeding should only occur on fabric with a high synthetic fiber content. Add Anti-bleed drop by drop. There is no set formula as the amount required varies with synthetic type and content. It thickens the color mixture quickly. Test frequently, until your formula prints without bleeding.

Softener...

For use when printing soft objects that are flexible, i.e. terry cloth towels. Use in at least a 5% solution.

Ink Retarder...

Slows down drying of ink in screens for longer print runs. Use at a 3-5% solution. Especially useful when printing with opaque white.

Fixation...

Prime Setting is at 150ºC for 3 minutes Alternatively, let the fabric dry then iron thoroughly, dry iron, cotton setting. Iron on the pigment side, cover the pigment with a piece of tissue to protect the iron.

Helpful Hints...

  • If silkscreening strain the color mixture through a piece of silkscreen mesh to eliminate any possibility of the screen clogging.
  • Always do a test sample, heat set and wash.
  • Avoid eye and skin contact, use all products in a well ventilated area.
  • Keep everything away from food paraphernalia.
  • It is recommended the set fabric be air cured one week before washing.
