Bubble Jet Set Instructions

Bubble Jet Set 2000 Instructions

Product Information...

Bubble Jet Set permanently fixes computer ink jet and bubble jet inks to fabrics. Now you can create your own fabric with your computer and printer. It allows you to take all of your art work, favorite posters, family photo's and apply them to fabric. Created fabrics may be used for quilts, garments, shirts, mouse pads, curtains, pillows, flags, etc. Printed fabrics maintain the original texture and feel. Bubble Jet Set does not make the fabric stiff or coat it with a plastic film. Follow instructions exactly for 95% permanency. Results vary with different printers. It is advisable to run tests before starting on a large project.

Equipment and Supplies…

    Bubble Jet Set 2000
    Bubble Jet Set Rinse
    Shallow plastic or metal pan
Freezer paper from the grocery store
    Rubber gloves

Fabrics…

Use only 100% natural fabrics, cottons, silks or acetate rayon. Fabrics with synthetic blends will not work. Smooth closely woven fabrics work best. Refer to our fabrics: Egyptian Cotton, China Silk, Silk Habotai or Silk Taffeta to name a few appropriate for printing. Use either a white or light colored fabric as ink is a transparent medium and will build on the colour underneath. There is no white ink, use white fabric if white is part of the finished design colour.

Safety…

This is a water based product that is classified as non-hazardous. However any product may cause allergies in sensitive people so use rubber gloves and work in a well ventilated area. Do not use any equipment that is used for food preparation. Keep locked away from children and pets.

We do not advise for use on baby products as many fabrics are chemically treated in other ways that may be hazardous for small children.

Fabric Preparation...

  1. It is a good idea to pre wash the fabric to remove sizing, especially if you want to save the soaking solution to use again. Cut or tear the fabric slightly larger all around than the size to be printed. This allows for shrinkage and trimming. For an 8 ½" X 11" finished print cut or tear your fabric about 10" X 12". Keep in mind that most printers have a banner setting that will print 44" or longer. Large images can be printed in strips and sewn together.
  2. Use a flat pan of appropriate size to soak your fabric. It does not matter if the pan is plastic or metal. Fabric strips may be folded accordion style if necessary.
  3. Shake the Bubble Jet Set well. Make sure that all of the crystals at the bottom of the bottle are completely dissolved.
  4. Pour the Bubble Jet Set over the fabric making sure it is completely saturated.
  5. Immediately put the cap back on the bottle. The solution becomes weaker when exposed to air.
  6. Let the saturated fabric soak in the solution for five minutes. If you are saving excess solution get it back into a sealed container as soon as possible.
  7. Do not wring solution out of the fabric. Either hang the fabric to drip dry or lay it flat to dry on a plastic sheet or towel. A blow dryer may be used to speed up drying time but do not dry the prepared fabric in a  household dryer. When the fabric is completely dry it will be slightly stiff.

Printing the Fabric...

  1. Cut the freezer paper into 8 ½" widths and as long as the finished image, minimum 11".
  2. Iron the shiny side of the freezer paper onto the back of the treated fabric. Iron out any air bubbles as they can cause ink smudges.
  3. Using a rotary cutter trim the sides of the fabric to the edge of the freezer paper. It is important that the edges are smooth all around the fabric/paper pieces. Any loose threads could get caught in the printer.
  4. Insert the fabric/paper into the printer so that the image will print onto the fabric.
  5. Print the fabric.
  6. Let the printed fabric/paper allow to sit and dry for at least 30 minutes.
  7. Separate the fabric from the freezer paper. The freezer paper backing sheets can be reused until they loose their bonding ability.

Rinsing and Washing the Fabric…

The printed fabric must be rinsed and washed with Bubble Jet Set Rinse to finish the chemical reaction for permanent fixation.

Use lots of water. If you use a small container excess inks and chemicals might back stain onto the image causing graying.

Do not let the fabric fold back on itself as a dark mark could form along the fold or ink could transfer from one area to another.

Hand Washing: Fill a big container with enough cold water to allow the printed fabric to move very freely. Add 4 capfuls of Bubble Jet Set Rinse per gallon of water. Submerge one piece of printed fabric at a time and agitate continuously for 2—3 minutes. It is important to rinse one piece at a time so any excess ink does not transfer onto another printed image.

Machine Wash: Use lots of water and the delicate cycle. Fill the machine to the appropriate level with cold water and stop it. Add 4 capfuls of Bubble Jet Set Rinse for a small load, increase for a large load. Put your prints in one at a time. Keep them separate in the water. Turn the machine back on. During the wash cycle open the machine and check that the fabric is not folded or twisted. Let the machine run through the rinse and spin cycles.

Dry in the dryer on a medium setting along with an old towel.

After Care...

Machine wash articles decorated with Bubble Jet Set images in cold water, gentle cycle and use Bubble Jet Set Rinse in place of other soaps. Fabric may be dried in the dryer on a medium heat setting along with an old towel.

Computer Printers…

Get to know your printer, different printers have different options for enhancing the printed image. Experiment with the "advanced" or "custom" options rather than just using the automatic settings. Try the finest DPI along with photo quality images and a vivid colour setting.

Notes...

The original Bubble Jet Set could not be used with Hewlett Packard Printers and is no longer being manufactured. It has been replaced with Bubble Jet Set 2000 which works in conjunction with all ink jet and bubble jet printers.

This product cannot be iron or heat fixed. It is the Bubble jet Set Rinse that contains the chemicals to make the image most permanent.

One 32 oz bottle of Bubble Jet Set will soak about 7 yards of 45" 1 ply Egyptian Cotton. It will soak up to 20 yards of fine China Silk.

Computer ink penetrates through fine silks making the design visible from both sides. It is therefore possible to print silk scarves.

Bubble jet Set does not protect from UV rays so don't hang printed fabrics in direct sunlight.

The manufacturer suggests printing fabrics shortly after soaking. If not using immediately store fabrics in sealed plastic away from light. Bubble Jet Set reacts with oxygen and looses strength.
