Making Silk Suede
For supple silk suede we like to use Crepe Back Satin (Charmeuse) in natural white or one of our many colours, but most silks may be treated for a soft luxurious drape.
Using TNA Detergent, see Soaps in our Catalogue, machine wash the fabric (warm wash-cool rinse) three to five times with towels or jeans. Stop when you like the texture. Allow the silk to run through the spin cycle for a more distressed look — just be aware that the wrinkles might be permanent.
Add a double dose of fabric softener and 1/2 cup of vinegar to the final rinse. Machine dry on medium with a few added towels.
Silk suede may be made before or after dyeing, omit the softener and vinegar if making silk suede prior to dyeing. Add both after fixation. Be aware that the colours will appear faded if
you apply dyes before the suede process.
